Key Considerations for Selecting Infrared Cameras

At some point, high-definition, infrared and surveillance cameras, three seemingly unrelated products, have become closely integrated. Nowadays, high-definition infrared surveillance cameras have become the most common products in the surveillance sector. According to statistics from relevant authorities, high-definition infrared cameras hold the largest market share among surveillance cameras. The booming market has also given rise to numerous irregularities. Below, we sort out several key details to note when choosing an infrared camera.

Points to Note When Choosing an Infrared Camera

  1. Surveillance cameras fall into black-and-white and color types. Generally, black-and-white surveillance cameras feature higher horizontal resolution and greater sensitivity than color models, making them more suitable for low-light locations and areas with dim lighting at night. Black-and-white surveillance cameras are also more affordable. However, color footage allows easy identification of clothing and scene colors, helping users capture and distinguish real-time on-site information promptly.
  2. Prioritize lenses with a large light aperture. For auto-iris or motorized varifocal lenses, select models with drive levels that can open the aperture as wide as possible. The power supply matched for infrared lamps must meet their minimum power requirements; insufficient illumination range is often caused by inadequate power supply.
  3. Most cameras are equipped with automatic electronic shutter and AGC (Automatic Gain Control) functions. Many lenses also support automatic iris adjustment to adapt to drastic illuminance changes between day and night. Therefore, when selecting cameras and lenses, users need to fully understand their features and configure the devices according to environmental requirements for optimal coordination with infrared lamps.
  4. Common issues include the "flashlight effect" or insufficient illumination range, mainly caused by the angle and performance of infrared lamps. Infrared lamps used in surveillance cameras have a peak wavelength of 850 nm, with optional beam angles ranging from 5° to 60°. A narrower beam angle delivers a longer illumination distance but a more obvious flashlight effect. Conversely, a wider beam angle eliminates the flashlight effect yet shortens the effective range. This tradeoff is mainly addressed by infrared lamp power: higher power delivers better night vision performance.

These are the key points for selecting infrared cameras. We hope this guide will be helpful. After purchasing your infrared camera, maintain close communication with the manufacturer and resolve any issues in a timely manner.
