Factors Affecting Bokeh Effect

The ability to create natural bokeh is one of the distinctive features available on interchangeable‑lens digital cameras equipped with large image sensors. Blurring the foreground and background makes the main subject stand out prominently.
Four key factors govern bokeh intensity: aperture (F‑number), focal length, focusing distance, and the distance between subject and background. You may combine these parameters effectively to achieve your desired bokeh outcome.
- F‑number: Lower value yields stronger bokeh.
- Focal length: Longer focal length yields stronger bokeh.
- Focusing distance: Shorter focusing distance yields stronger bokeh.
- Subject‑to‑background distance: Greater separation yields stronger bokeh.

Aperture (F‑number)
Aperture is quantified by the F‑number. A smaller F‑number produces more pronounced bokeh, while a larger F‑number results in weaker background blurring.
These sample images are shot from the identical position with only the F‑number adjusted. At F2.8, focus falls on the red glass bead, with both foreground and background rendered blurred. At F16, the targeted red bead as well as beads in front and behind are all sharp with no visible bokeh.

Focal Length
Focal length also impacts bokeh strength. Longer focal lengths create heavier blur, whereas shorter focal lengths deliver less bokeh. For zoom lenses, shoot at the telephoto end to amplify background blurring.
The above examples are captured with the same zoom lens at 35 mm (wide‑angle end) and 250 mm (telephoto end). The camera position is adjusted so the foreground flower maintains identical apparent size across both shots. As demonstrated here, when shooting space permits, step slightly further away from your subject and use telephoto to achieve intense background bokeh.

Focusing Distance (Distance between camera and subject)
Bokeh intensity varies with camera settings including aperture and focal length, as well as the physical gap between camera and subject. Moving the camera closer to the subject increases background blur. Note there is a minimum working distance limit for every lens.
In the following comparison, only focusing distance is modified. Image [1] is taken at 150 cm from the subject. Image [2] is captured at 50 cm. Apart from the sharp focal plane, much larger portions of the frame appear out‑of‑focus in the second shot.

Distance Between Subject and Background
Bokeh depends not merely on camera‑to‑subject distance, but also subject‑to‑background separation. The further the background sits behind the subject, the stronger the bokeh effect.
In the reference images, the right‑side lens is repositioned at different distances for comparison, while focus remains locked on the left‑side lens. You can observe that background blur intensifies as distance from the focused subject increases. In scenarios where background objects can be repositioned, for instance when photographing small desktop items, adjust the spacing between your main subject and background elements to tune bokeh intensity.
To conclude, four factors jointly determine bokeh magnitude. You do not have to maximize all four to generate pleasing blurred backgrounds. Adjust each parameter according to real‑world shooting conditions to get effective bokeh results.
