Minimum Focus Distance

Every lens requires a certain minimum distance to focus on a subject. This distance is known as the minimum focus distance. If the distance to the subject is shorter than this value, the lens cannot achieve proper focus on the subject.

Minimum focus distance varies from lens to lens. For zoom lenses, it also changes with focal‑length adjustment. To check the minimum focus distance of a lens, refer to its specification sheet or the distance markings printed on the lens, as shown in the figure below.

Distance markings are located on the front of the lens, given in meters (m) and feet (ft). For the SELP1650 lens shown above, the minimum focus distance ranges from 0.25 m (25 cm) to 0.30 m (30 cm), depending on the focal length. If you get closer than this distance, accurate focus cannot be obtained, and shutter release will be disabled.
When you wish to get as close as possible to your subject — for example, when shooting close‑ups of flowers — move toward the subject as near as you can first. Then gradually move backward until you find the working distance at which the subject comes into focus.
