How to Correctly Understand Image Sensor Size Standards

Image sensors (CCD / CMOS) are commonly specified in inches ("), such as 1/1.8" or 1/3". Many people are informed that this figure stands for the diagonal length of the sensor, yet actual measurements prove these nominal dimensions do not equal the physical diagonal of the sensor chip.For instance, the nominal value of 1/3" converts to roughly 8.4582 mm, while the true diagonal length of a 1/3" image sensor is only 6 mm.

This sensor sizing convention dates back to the cathode ray tube (CRT) television era in the 1950s. Back then, the inch designation referred not to the diagonal of the active imaging area, but to the outer diameter of the entire glass envelope of the CRT tube. Engineers soon discovered that the usable active imaging area inside the tube amounted to approximately two-thirds of the nominal outer diameter, for multiple structural reasons.

This legacy naming convention is outdated and misleading. Sensor sizes marked like 1/2.3" are ambiguous and inaccurate. There is no fixed mathematical formula linking the nominal imaging circle diameter to the actual sensor diagonal, though the actual active area is consistently around two-thirds of the nominal CRT tube dimension. Each nominal "type" covers a family of sensors within that size bracket, rather than denoting precise fixed physical measurements.
Sony and other leading manufacturers have introduced an updated standardized naming scheme for sensors. Inch units are phased out, replaced by the Type designation:
  • The traditional 1" sensor is renamed Type 1
  • The traditional 1/3" sensor is renamed Type 1/3, and so on.
In addition to diagonal length, the aspect ratio directly determines the total imaging area of a sensor. Sensors with identical diagonal measurements but different aspect ratios feature distinct pixel areas. To fully confirm the effective imaging size, both diagonal length and aspect ratio must be referenced together.
